Walk the car with the checklist — outside, then inside.

Agree on price, then fill the bill of sale together.

1 Driver’s front corner Headlight, bumper corner, fender tip, tire tread and sidewall, and the brake visible through the wheel.

2 Front end Check bumper alignment and grille and hood gaps. Ask the seller to turn on the headlights and signals.

3 Under the hood Check the oil, coolant, belts, hoses, and that the battery is secured. Note anything that looks recently messy or suspiciously bone-dry clean — just write what you see.

4 Passenger front corner Same checks as the driver’s side: light, bumper, fender, tire, and visible brake.

5 Passenger front door Panel gaps are even; the door opens and closes cleanly; the lower rocker is solid (salt/rust check).

6 Passenger rear door Same door, rocker, and glass checks if it’s a four-door.

7 Passenger rear tire Check tread, even wear, and the wheel well. Grease flung from a CV boot onto the well is worth a note.

8 Rear passenger corner Tail light, bumper corner, quarter panel.

9 Rear / trunk The trunk or hatch opens; spare and tools are present; the bumper is straight; the brake lights work (the seller can help); the exhaust tip is secure.

10 Driver’s rear corner Tail light, bumper, quarter panel, rear tire.

11 Driver’s rear door Check panel gaps, rocker rust, and glass.

12 Driver’s front door Jamb VIN sticker matches the title; door closes well; rocker solid.

13 Tire comparison Front tires should wear roughly alike. Heavy wear on the inside edges is worth noting — it can mean an alignment issue.

14 Undercarriage glance No unsafe holes in the floors or rails; brake lines look sound. If you are unsure, note that you want a shop inspection.

15 Driver’s seat The seat adjusts, the belt latches, and the pedals aren’t far more worn than the mileage suggests.

16 Instruments Turn the key on: warning lights should come on for a bulb check, then go off as expected.

If you find something — what to ask for

Small wear (tires, brakes, battery): ask for a price credit equal to a fair estimate, or ask the seller to replace it before sale.
You’re unsure: pause for a pre-purchase inspection at a shop you both agree on.
You have a quote: “A shop said about $X — could we meet at $Y?”
Paperwork unclear: wait until the title is clear before money changes hands.
Safety concern: have it fixed or inspected first, or thank them and leave.
They won’t negotiate: that’s fine — buy at the asking price, or walk away on good terms.

□ Titled (MY 2000+ typically): Assign title on reverse — buyer name, address, odometer; both sign; give title to buyer
□ Keep plates (seller keeps NH plates)
□ Both keep a signed bill of sale (required for title-exempt; useful for titled cars)
□ Cancel insurance only after transfer
□ Selling 5+ vehicles retail in 12 months → dealer license may be required (RSA 261:103-b)

One last thought

This is a used car. It will not be perfect — and it doesn’t have to be. Expect normal wear: small scratches, older tires, a quirk or two. The checklist is there so you catch the stuff that matters (safety, big repairs, deal-breakers), not so every car looks factory-new. Use what you find to decide and negotiate fairly — then buy with eyes open, or walk away. Perfect is for the showroom; good enough and honest is the private-sale win.
